Folk costume for my little boy

romanian folk costume
I can't even remember when I started to dream about making costumes for my kinds. I was for sure before I had a kid or a sewing machine. I always thought that moms who can do that are so awesome and who doesn't want to me an awesome mom ...Thins was my first chance. 1st of June is children day for us my boy was having a small celebration at the kindergarten and was required to have something to resemble a traditional Romanian  costume. It is not hand embroidery and there are not exactly the right motifs but I think is not that bad either for a modern interpretation.

I used cotton cloth and some kind of ribbon.  Here are some details about how I did it:

There was a lot or work sewing all those tapes but it was all worth it. Andrei looks so nice in it.
And here he is using it again again 6 month later at the Christmas celebration at daycare.

Sew little, smile big... ( pants )

It is so nice to see this big smile wrapped in something nice that mommy made. I can never wish for a better modeling... It is not easy for me to sew for a boy. But I am trying. So here is my practice run. Easy knit pants and a blouse . I used ready to wear to trace the pattern.

The 1st two pair that I completed seemed a bit tight so I did what I usually do when I mess up.  I try to rethink and change the design to cover it up. Think time I cut the side and added some printed fabric stripe.

I really liked the result so I decided I will keep doing thins on purpose. I already did a black pair as well with a stripe of hearts:

And since hearts should not be alone for to long I also sew a heart blouse for him:

Maybe all this hearts are a bit girly but I have confidence that he is man enough to pull it off.

I like not to worry about this cloth when he plays or eats... and for that he can never have enough cloths. This knit pants closed in the overlock  sewing machine are so fast to make so I decided I should do more. So here is the stripe mini series:

I didn't like to pairs the same so I played with the stripes ( the fabric was double stretch ).
I would still like to do so many more but we will see ...

Summer is here with colors and bags...

fabric handbag
Bags, bags and then some more bags. Is like the center of my sewing universe. I do what I do and then bags again. Maybe because there is easier to me o create a pattern for them.  Just 3D math... Maybe because I can play with my quilt fabrics... Maybe because hardly ever see a non boring bag out in the street. everyone seems to be using such plain bags... I don't know what it is... but I love making bags.

I  used the base part pattern from a bag I created for a sewing contest on LucruDeMana forum quite some time ago... There are a lot of things that I did wrong with that bag but I loved it.  There is yet no do over...

Here are a few photos from the execution:

And since I was talking about my old contest bag let me show my entry from bag there to you:

I really with I would have kept the back and the handlers more simple. Also I was to new back then to a better curved line between the 2 pieces. I didn't behave to well. But it was a lovely bag.

Right after the contest with all the frustration of thing I have done wrong I did a new one. A smaller one. I love that better. Let me show it to you:
Looking back I see that I improved the quality of my zippers and my handlers are now better integrated and more solid... but my interior pockets remained exactly the same :) .
